Gli storici e i Ranters. Dagli anni Sessanta a oggi

This thesis traces the historiography that has dealt with the topic of the ranters, the eccentric radical 'movement' that distinguished itself among its contemporaries during the English Civil War, especially between 1649 and 1651. The topic has been dealt with repeatedly in the historiography of the second half of the 20th century, which has been concerned with reconstructing not only the perception of the ranters of the time but also with actually defining the elements that characterised the group, given the lack of an institutional base, organisation and a defined theological corpus. The thesis reconstructs the theses and arguments of the various authors who contributed most to the definition of this group and its particular characteristics, particularly between the 1960s and 1970s, and to analyse the new contributions that more recent studies have made to the subject

La tesi ripercorre la storiografia che si è occupata del tema dei ranters, l’eccentrico “movimento” radicale che si contraddistinse tra i contemporanei durante la Guerra Civile inglese, in particolar modo tra il 1649 e il 1651. L’argomento è stato trattato ripetutamente nella storiografia del secondo Novecento, che si è occupata di ricostruire non solo la percezione dei ranters del tempo ma di definire effettivamente gli elementi che caratterizzavano il gruppo, dato la mancanza di una base istituzionale, un’organizzazione e un corpus teologico definito. La tesi ricostruisce le tesi e le argomentazioni dei vari autori che hanno contribuito maggiormente alla definizione di questo gruppo e dei suoi caratteri particolari, in particolare tra anni ’60 e ’70, e di analizzare i nuovi contributi che gli studi più recenti hanno apportato al tema.
