History Has Its Eyes On You: l'impatto di Lin-Manuel Miranda nella cultura statunitense

In 2016 the musical Hamilton, based on the life of the American Founding Father of the same name, was nominated for 16 Tony Awards, breaking the record previously established by Billy Elliot and The Producers, then winning 11. It’s just one of the many achievements accomplished by Lin-Manuel Miranda. But how did he get here? Miranda is a singer and composer of Puerto Rican descent born in 1980 in New York City. He’s always been interested in theater and when he was still in high school staged an adaptation of West Side Story and then, in his sophomore year in college, he wrote an original play, In the Heights. The musical was still in its early stages and went through two rewrites until its official debut in 2005. The story is inspired by the people of Washington Heights, one of the neighborhoods in New York City largely populated by Latinx immigrants. The first draft contains one of Miranda’s distinctive features already, the use of rap, hip hop and Latin music. Today Hamilton is still Miranda’s greatest success, but through the years he was involved in a large number of projects, like the partnership with Disney started in 2016 and his directorial debut on Netflix with Tick, Tick…BOOM! (2022), an adaptation of the semi autobiographical musical about Jonathan Larson. This dissertation aims to examine the conditions that allowed Miranda to take a prominent space in Hollywood and on Broadway and how his works have become a cultural phenomenon appealing to a wide audience, regardless of their age, social background and political ideals.

Nel 2016 il musical Hamilton, basato sulla figura dell’omonimo padre fondatore degli Stati Uniti, è stato candidato a 16 Tony Awards, superando il record precedentemente stabilito da Billy Elliot e The Producers, vincendone poi 11. È solo una delle vette toccate dalla magnum opus del compositore Lin-Manuel Miranda. Ma come è giunto fin qui? Miranda è un compositore e cantautore nato nel 1980 a New York da una famiglia di immigrati portoricani. Da sempre interessato al mondo dello spettacolo, già al liceo si cimenta con un allestimento di West Side Story e, al secondo anno di università, di un musical inedito, ovvero In the Heights. Il musical si trovava ancora in fase embrionale e subì nel tempo cinque riscritture, fino al suo debutto ufficiale nel 2005. La storia prende spunto dalle vicende del quartiere in cui Miranda viveva al tempo, cioè Washington Heights, che conta una popolazione a maggioranza di discendenza latina. Questo primo tentativo conteneva già uno dei caratteri distintivi di molte opere di Miranda, ovvero l’utilizzo del rap, dell’hip hop e della musica latina. Se Hamilton rimane, ad oggi, il suo più grande successo, Miranda è stato comunque coinvolto negli anni in un gran numero di progetti, tra cui la partnership con la Disney cominciata nel 2016 e il suo debutto come regista del film Netflix Tick, Tick… BOOM! (2022), un adattamento dell’omonimo musical semiautobiografico del compositore e drammaturgo Jonathan Larson. Obiettivo del presente elaborato è esaminare le condizioni che hanno permesso a Lin-Manuel Miranda di occupare uno spazio di tale rilievo all’interno del panorama di Broadway e soprattutto di come le sue opere siano diventate fenomeni culturali capaci di appassionare un vasto pubblico, indipendentemente dalla loro età, background sociale e ideale politico.
