Gli echi della Rivoluzione Americana: la nascita degli Stati Uniti d’America nelle opere a stampa italiane tra Antico Regime e Rivoluzione (1765 – 1815)

The proposed research focuses on the analysis of different types of printed works of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, containing, in Italian, information about the American Revolution and the birth of the United States, with the aim of observing how these transoceanic phenomena were represented in the heterogeneous Italian reality of the time. The thesis is divided into two chapters, which refer to two different periods. The first chapter, more introductory and dependent on other recent studies, deals with analyzing some printed works, especially periodicals and journals, produced between 1765 and 1795, for that period largely contemporary with the events of the American Revolution and the first constitutional debates of the United States. The second chapter, which focuses on the originality of the research, aims to examine a varied range of printed works produced between 1796 and 1814/15, during the Italian revolutionary phase, on the American Revolution and its various themes for reflection. This research has made it possible to observe how the interest in North American events has changed over the decades of reference and how it has influenced debates and discussions concerning for example, the French Revolution and other pivotal events in Europe at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Finally, it was possible to observe different trends for each phase, regarding the types of printed works selected to convey news, information, and reflections about the birth of the United States of America and their early years.

La ricerca proposta è incentrata sull’analisi di differenti tipologie di opere a stampa di fine Settecento e inizio Ottocento recanti, in lingua italiana, informazioni riguardo alla Rivoluzione americana e alla nascita degli Stati Uniti, con lo scopo di osservare in che modo tali fenomeni transoceanici siano stati rappresentati nell’eterogenea realtà italiana dell’epoca. La tesi è articolata in due capitoli, i quali fanno riferimento a due periodi differenti. Il primo capitolo, più introduttivo e dipendente da altri studi recenti, si occupa di analizzare alcune opere a stampa, in particolar modo periodici e gazzette, prodotte tra il 1765 ed il 1795, per quel periodo in gran parte contemporaneo alle vicende della Rivoluzione americana e ai primi dibattiti costituzionali degli Stati Uniti. Il secondo capitolo invece, nel quale è incentrata l’originalità della ricerca, si propone di esaminare una variegata gamma di opere a stampa prodotte tra il 1796 ed il 1814/15, durante la fase rivoluzionaria italiana, riguardanti la Rivoluzione americana e i vari temi di riflessione da essa ispirati. Tale ricerca ha permesso di osservare come l’interesse per le vicende nordamericane sia cambiato nel corso dei decenni di riferimento e di come abbia influenzato dibattiti e discussioni riguardanti, ad esempio, la Rivoluzione francese ed altri avvenimenti cardine dell’Europa a cavallo tra Diciottesimo e Diciannovesimo secolo. Infine, è stata possibile osservare tendenze differenti per ciascuna fase, riguardo alle tipologie di opere a stampa selezionate per veicolare notizie, informazioni e riflessioni riguardo la nascita degli Stati Uniti d’America e i loro primi anni.
