William McNeill e la World History

The essay deals with William McNeill's ways of periodizing human history throughout his academic and literary career. The aim of the essay is to analyze and understand his evolution as a historian and writer of World History, which varies not only based on the historical context in which the author himself is inserted but also for his intention to propose more precise and less ethnocentric works. Also considering the numerous criticisms and reviews, recognized as valid by the author himself, which, in addition to deconstructing his intentions of not doing a purely Western history, accused him of historical determinism. We will analyse this progress and verify its effectiveness. To this end, the essay considers several macro-themes addressed and revisited by McNeill, often with different perspectives, throughout the course of his publications. These macro-themes were chosen primarily for their importance within McNeill's works but also because they are particularly exemplary of the author's development. The themes addressed also coincide with areas of my interest. Before addressing the individual themes, the first chapter will present a brief intellectual and academic biography of William McNeill; then, in the second paragraph, a brief but exhaustive definition of World History will be developed. Subsequently, William McNeill's significant contribution to the birth and growth of this discipline will be reported. The bibliographic references, as already written previously, will intersect in the various chapters precisely to make the general picture as complete as possible although it proves complicated and almost never definitive in a definitive way given the large amount of material that the author has produced. In addition to the author's World History texts to make the criticism and analysis more punctual and authoritative, some articles and texts written by the author himself or by other critics or historians will be cited. A useful text also for the biography and in particular for his relationship with the historian Toynbee is: World History, La storia delle civiltà secondo William McNeill written by Federico Leonardi and Luca Maggioni published by Rubettino Università in 2015. Another text of broader scope on World History is the text by Laura Di Fiore and Marco Meriggi: World History.Le nuove rotte della storia Published by Editori Laterza in its seventh edition of 2019, a text that reconstructs in a precise and synthetic way the theoretical stages of World History and its scholars.

La tesi verte sulle modalità di William McNeill di periodizzare la storia umana, nel corso della sua carriera accademica e letteraria. L'obiettivo della tesi è prendere in analisi e comprendere la sua evoluzione come studioso e scrittore di World History, che varia non solo in base al contesto storico in cui lo stesso autore è inserito ma anche per la sua intenzione di proporre dei lavori più precisi e sempre meno etnocentrici. Anche in considerazione delle numerose critiche e recensioni, riconosciute valide dallo stesso autore , le quali, oltre a decostruire le sue intenzioni di non fare una storia puramente occidentale lo accusavano di determinismo storico. Analizzeremo appunto questo progresso e ne verificheremo l’efficacia. A tal fine nella tesi vengono considerati diversi macro-temi affrontati e ripresi da McNeill, spesso con ottiche diverse, lungo il corso delle sue pubblicazioni. Questi macro-temi sono stati scelti in primo luogo per la loro importanza all’interno delle opere di McNeill ma, anche perché particolarmente esemplificativi dello sviluppo dell’autore. I temi affrontati coincidono inoltre con ambiti di mio interesse. Prima di affrontare i singoli temi, nel primo capitolo verrà presentata una breve biografia intellettuale e accademica di William McNeill in seguito, nel secondo paragrafo, viene sviluppata una seppur breve, esaustiva definizione di World History. Successivamente verrà riportato il significativo contributo che William McNeill ha dato alla nascita e alla crescita di questa disciplina. I riferimenti bibliografici, come già scritto precedentemente si incroceranno nei vari capitoli appunto per rendere il quadro generale il più completo possibile sebbene risulti complicato e quasi mai esaustivo in modo definitivo vista la grande quantità di materiale che l’autore ha prodotto. Oltre ai testi di World History dell’autore canadese per rendere la critica e l’analisi più puntuale e autorevole, verranno citati alcuni articoli e testi scritti dallo stesso autore o da altri critici o storici. Un testo utile anche alla biografia e in particolare al suo rapporto con lo storico Toynbee e contenente una intervista all'autore stesso è: World History, La storia delle civiltà secondo William H. McNeill scritto da Federico Leonardi e Luca Maggioni edito da Rubettino Università nel 2015.
