This thesis has the aim of explaining the evolution of the crime of rape, and how the legislation in various countries has changed regarding this offence. It will provide for a study of the ancient norms, showing the roots of cultural and legal notions that still affect legal systems today, and the progression towards a concept of rape based on the absence of consent, rather than physical aggression. Some possible future improvements are exemplified at the end of the thesis.
