Gender Pay Gap in Political Speeches: A Comparative Study of Democratic Leaders

The theme of the Gender Pay Gap has become prominent in a huge number of political speeches in the last few years, since it has become a crucial social topic. The present study explores the linguistic strategies adopted by four American Left-wing political figures to deal with the issue of wage disparity based on gender, i.e. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The study is based on a corpus of texts belonging to the period between 2014 and 2022 and delivered on Equal Pay Day. The comparative analysis aims at identifying the main discursive and rhetorical features as well as the metaphorical patterns utilised to investigate gender discourse. The analysis is carried out making reference to the methodological tools of Critical Discourse Analysis and Critical Metaphor Analysis. Among the discursive strategies adopted, the orators tend to present the issue of gender pay gap as a discriminatory procedure that not only affects women’s lifestyles and their working positions, but also the financial security of their families and the broader economy. The politicians highlight that a combination of social factors such as gender and ethnicity puts women in a far more unfavourable social position. In addition, the orators maintain that discriminatory paying systems prevent America from being an equitable country. As regards the metaphorical patterns, the orators tend to adopt conventional and conceptual metaphors which reinforce the idea that the society imposes women to deal with family responsibilities on their own, forcing them to abandon the workforce, and emphasise the idea that a more transparent paying system should be implemented in order to tackle the gender pay gap. ​

Negli ultimi anni il tema del Gender Pay Gap ha assunto un ruolo di primo piano in un gran numero di discorsi politici, essendo diventato un argomento sociale di importanza cruciale. Il presente studio esplora le strategie linguistiche adottate da quattro figure politiche della sinistra americana per affrontare la questione della disparità salariale basata sul genere, ovvero Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden e Kamala Harris. Lo studio si basa su un corpus di testi appartenenti al periodo compreso tra il 2014 e il 2022 e pronunciati in occasione dell'Equal Pay Day. L'analisi comparativa mira a individuare le principali caratteristiche discorsive e retoriche, nonché i modelli metaforici utilizzati per indagare il discorso di genere. L'analisi è condotta facendo riferimento agli strumenti metodologici dell'analisi critica del discorso e dell'analisi critica delle metafore. Le strategie discorsive adottate dagli oratori tendono a presentare la questione del divario retributivo di genere come una procedura discriminatoria che non solo influisce sullo stile di vita delle donne e sulla loro posizione lavorativa, ma anche sulla sicurezza finanziaria delle loro famiglie e sull'economia in generale. I politici sottolineano che una combinazione di fattori sociali come il genere e l'etnia pone le donne in una posizione sociale molto più sfavorevole. Inoltre, gli oratori sostengono che i sistemi di retribuzione discriminatori impediscono all'America di essere un Paese equo. Per quanto riguarda gli schemi metaforici, gli oratori tendono ad adottare metafore convenzionali e concettuali che rafforzano l'idea che la società imponga alle donne di occuparsi da sole delle responsabilità familiari, costringendole ad abbandonare la forza lavoro, e sottolineano l'idea che per affrontare il divario retributivo di genere si dovrebbe attuare un sistema di retribuzione più trasparente.
