The thesis investigates the vital role of non-profit organizations (NPOs) in addressing social issues and delivering public goods. Drawing on key theoretical frameworks such as the Weisbrod model, stakeholder theory, government failure theory, and interdependence theory, the paper explores the factors that influence the formation and functioning of NPOs. An empirical study examining non-profit sector density in Texas serves as a focal point, shedding light on market demand, stakeholder characteristics, government policies, and competition dynamics. The paper also highlights the crucial role of trust in the non-profit sector, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. Additionally, it discusses the importance of tailoring non-profit activities and services to meet the unique needs of target communities, as postulated by the heterogeneity hypothesis and public good theory. Recommendations are provided for NPOs to prioritize strong communication, encourage competition, and better understand the communities they serve for enhanced societal impact. Overall, the paper offers valuable insights into the formation, functioning, and societal relevance of NPOs.
