In today's global competitive environment, cities have to work hard to differentiate themselves in order to create a positive image. One of the strategies they can adopt to enhance their brand is the organization of a mega event, which can either be cultural or sportive. This study aims at examining the change in the host country's destination image before and after a mega event, by focusing on the hosting city of Milan. In order to carry out this analysis, the case of Milan Expo 2015 was selected, as considered a highly representative example of such important transition. The paper combines quantitative and qualitative research: the analysis of the most relevant official documents related to Expo 2015 is associated with the major findings gathered from ten qualitative interviews conducted with the main experts within the mega events industry. The results show that Expo 2015 played a pivotal role in the international repositioning of Milan as a global city as well as on the city's destination image, both from a tourist and from a mega event legacies' perspective. From the legacies' point of view, the management and know-how developed during the organization of such an event were considered by the experts as the most crucial leaning points. The city's repositioning as an internationally attractive destination was further confirmed by the compare-and-contrast analysis carried out, which highlighted the significant evolution that Milan went through, shifting from a destination merely chosen for business-related purposes to a truly global touristic destination. The findings from the current research also demonstrate how the successful organization of Expo Milano 2015 played a crucial role in changing local communities' opinion regarding the candidature for the Winter Olympics “Milano Cortina 2026”, gaining remarkable support. In fact, the candidature has achieved an unusual consensus by the general public as an immediate consequence of the Expo's success. According to the International Olympic Committee, 87% of Milan's citizens were favorable to host the Winter Olympic Games, as they foresaw an opportunity to promote the city's image and gain further exposure. Finally, the study also demonstrates that during the Covid-19 pandemic, where economies and cities were subjected to drastic financial hardship, mega events can help future hosting cities to recover at a faster pace.

Abstract
