Consapevolezza di genere ed empatia: uno studio sulle differenze tra medici e studenti di medicina.

The present study was undertaken to examine the size of the gender awareness and empathy in a sample of general practitioners and students enrolled in the studies of Medicine and Surgery. Despite the plurality of treated focus, the focal point of this work is certainly represented by an analysis of the differences between women and men and among doctors and students about the constructs of gender awareness and empathy, as measured by questionnaires. Statistical analysis were preceded by a theoretical study of both examined constructs and by the expression of research hypotheses. The empirical analysis has provided interesting insights; in particular, it has shown a correlation between the sensitivity with respect to gender differences and empathy. Regarding the attitude of men and women, it was found, in line with the literature, that women adhere less to stereotypes and gender prejudice than men counterparts and are a more empathic sex. Instead, with regard to the differences between doctors and students, the results were in disagreement with what had emerged from the theoretical analysis, in fact doctors have proven to be more sensitive to gender issues and, at the same time, more empathetic than the other category. These data led to the hypothesis that an important role is played by the experience, clearly lacking in students. The theoretical support, combined with the experimental part of the research work, have allowed the understanding of the constructs examined and trends that they have with respect to gender and occupation variables.

Il presente lavoro è stato intrapreso allo scopo di esaminare le dimensioni della consapevolezza di genere e dell'empatia in un campione costituito da medici di medicina generale e studenti iscritti al corso di studi di Medicina e Chirurgia. Nonostante la pluralità dei focus trattati, il punto nodale di questo lavoro è sicuramente rappresentato da un'analisi delle differenze tra donne e uomini e tra medici e studenti riguardo i costrutti della consapevolezza di genere e dell'empatia, misurati mediante la somministrazione di questionari. Le analisi statistiche sono state precedute da uno studio teorico di entrambi i costrutti esaminati e dalla formulazione di ipotesi di ricerca. L'analisi empirica ha fornito interessanti spunti di riflessione; in particolare, ha evidenziato una correlazione tra la sensibilità rispetto alle differenze di genere e l'empatia. Riguardo l'atteggiamento di uomini e donne, è emerso, in linea con la letteratura di riferimento, che le donne aderiscono meno agli stereotipi e ai pregiudizi di genere rispetto ai colleghi uomini e che si rivelano più empatiche dell'altro sesso. Riguardo invece le differenze riscontrate tra medici e studenti, i risultati si sono rivelati in disaccordo rispetto a ciò che era emerso dall'analisi teorica, infatti i medici si sono dimostrati sia più sensibili alle tematiche di genere sia più empatici rispetto all'altra categoria. Tali dati hanno condotto ad ipotizzare che un ruolo importante sia rivestito dall'esperienza, chiaramente carente negli studenti. Il supporto teorico, unito alla parte sperimentale del lavoro di ricerca, hanno consentito la comprensione dei costrutti presi in esame e delle tendenze che questi hanno rispetto alle variabili genere e professione.
