Il doppiaggio italiano di Dolor y gloria: le sfide traduttive del dialoghista

The present work aims at analysing the translation for the Italian dubbing of Pain and Glory (2019), the latest film by the renowned Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. More specifically, its objective is to investigate the translation techniques and strategies applied by the dialogue writer, Valerio Piccolo, to solve the challenges posed by the audiovisual text, whose degree of effectiveness in the new version is then evaluated. The thesis is structured in four chapters. The first chapter provides an overview of the field of Audiovisual Translation, describing the most common TAV modalities and examining the factors that have determined their varied geographical distribution in Europe. The second chapter explores the practice of dubbing in Italy: firstly, it offers a brief overview of its history and describes the characteristics of its peculiar “language”, the doppiaggese; secondly, the stages of its process are analysed, each one with its professional figure, focusing in particular on the translation-adaptation process and on the complex work carried out by the adattatore dialoghista; thirdly, the main translation challenges of dialogue writing are illustrated, listing the most commonly used translation techniques and strategies. The third chapter is dedicated to the film object of study: after presenting Pedro Almodóvar's biography, filmography and style, the themes and the spatio-temporal setting of Pain and Glory are examined; then, it provides some information about the making of the Italian dubbing. In the fourth chapter, multiple examples taken from the film are provided both in Spanish and in Italian, in order to investigate the dialogue writer's translation solutions to the most problematic categories of the audiovisual text. ​

El presente trabajo se propone analizar la traducción para el doblaje italiano de Dolor y gloria (2019), la última película del renombrado cineasta español Pedro Almodóvar. Más específicamente, el objetivo es investigar las técnicas y las estrategias de traducción aplicadas por el ajustador de diálogos, Valerio Piccolo, para solucionar los retos traductológicos que el texto audiovisual analizado plantea, evaluando su grado de eficacia en la nueva versión. La tesis se estructura en cuatro capítulos. En el primer capítulo se proporciona una visión general acerca del ámbito de la traducción audiovisual, se describen las modalidades TAV más comunes y se examinan los factores que determinan su variada repartición geográfica en Europa. En el segundo capítulo se profundizan las prácticas del doblaje en Italia: en primer lugar, se ofrece una breve visión de su historia y se describen las características de su «lengua» peculiar, el doppiaggese; en segundo lugar, se recorren las fases del proceso, cada una con su figura profesional, centrándose en particular en la de traducción-adaptación y en el complejo trabajo del adattatore dialoghista; por último, se ilustran los principales retos traductológicos para el ajustador de diálogos y se listan las técnicas y las estrategias más comúnmente empleadas en el mundo cinematográfico para encontrar soluciones eficaces. El tercer capítulo está dedicado a la película objeto de estudio: después de presentar la biografía, la filmografía y el estilo de Pedro Almodóvar, se examinan los temas y la ambientación espacio-temporal de Dolor y gloria; además, se ofrece alguna información sobre la realización de su doblaje italiano. Por último, en el cuarto capítulo se proporcionan múltiples ejemplos extraídos de escenas de la película, propuestos tanto en español como en su traducción al italiano, con el fin de investigar cuáles han sido las soluciones que el ajustador de diálogos ha aplicado a las categorías más problemáticas del texto audiovisual. ​
