Abstract

History teaches us that, since most ancient times an eternal struggle between good and evil, light and darkness, justice and crime, has been waged and never ceases to exist. The work carried out in this thesis, aims to study the phenomenon of organized crime, which has started to mark the world territory since the beginning of the 19th century. The origin of the historical and social path that this work deals with, in fact, begins right from the middle of the 19th century, when the first bands of Brigands made their appearance in the territories of southern Italy. The Brigants then became real criminal associations and grouped themselves in the so-called "Secret Societies". These Societies, precisely Secret, acted in secrecy and illegality. As time went by and society changed, secret societies changed shape, name and ideologies, first they were the Brigands, then the Carbonari, the Freemasons, and so on, but one thing never changed: the rules that these associations had . These organizations had precise rules for joining them. The entry into the associations took place through an initiation rite preceded by a period in which the new member was tested and observed by the boss, once accepted in the organization there was the rule of silence that governed sovereign, no one outside the members of the organizations could come know about internal affairs. Migratory phenomena and the industrial development of society led criminals to move from their homes, towards new horizons, from Sicily to America, throughout Europe up to Asia and Australia. This led to a globalization of the criminal phenomenon. The most discussed form of criminal organization in the world is that of the Mafia.
