L'UTILIZZO DEL MICELIO FUNGINO NELLA BIOECONOMIA

Through this paper I have tried to reconcile two of my interests, apparently distinct from each other: the passion for the mushroom world with that for the corporate and economic world. The motivations that prompted me to try this analysis derive mainly from questions that I began to ask myself going further and further during my studies; that is if in some way mushrooms, understood as the fruiting body of the mycelium, and the mycelium itself could play a role in a macroeconomic context in continuous search for innovation for the search for solutions to environmental pollution. The purpose of this thesis is, therefore, to provide the reader with a series of remedies to the previously mentioned problem by describing how mushrooms are already used by some Italian and foreign companies, also showing the impacts of these uses on the surrounding environment, and thus postponing the discussion also on issues of circular economy and sustainability. The objective is instead to investigate the possibility that fungal mycelium is used as a material for the production of various sustainable products and to verify its future prospects. We will therefore start with an introductory chapter in which it will be specified what is meant by fungus and which ones will be taken into consideration for the analysis, also providing a series of quantitative-qualitative data on the problem of environmental pollution. The first chapter will deal with the process of creating "mushroom-based" materials and the different uses of these organisms mainly in the industrial field but also in other economies, showing the various operations involved in the processes through graphs. The second chapter will show some valid alternatives for reusing products at the end of their life cycle. Finally, the third chapter will present some companies that, albeit for a few years, have implemented new strategies that include the use of fungal organisms within their processes, managing to maintain, and in some cases to create, real stably independent businesses. ​

Attraverso il presente elaborato ho cercato di conciliare due miei interessi, apparentemente distinti tra loro: la passione per il mondo fungino con quella per il mondo aziendale ed economico. Le motivazioni che mi hanno spinto a cimentarmi in questa analisi derivano principalmente da domande che ho iniziato a farmi andando sempre più avanti durante il mio percorso di studi; ovvero se in qualche modo i funghi, intesi come corpo fruttifero del micelio, ed il micelio stesso potessero ricoprire un ruolo in un contesto macroeconomico in continua ricerca di innovazione per la ricerca di soluzioni all’inquinamento ambientale. Lo scopo di questa tesi è, dunque, quello di fornire al lettore una serie di rimedi al problema precedentemente citato descrivendo come i funghi vengono già utilizzati da alcune realtà aziendali italiane ed estere, mostrando anche gli impatti di tali utilizzi sull’ambiente circostante, e rimandando quindi il discorso anche su temi di economia circolare e sostenibilità. L’obiettivo è invece approfondire sulla possibilità che il micelio fungino venga utilizzato come materiale da produzione di vari prodotti sostenibili e verificarne la prospettiva futura. Si partirà quindi con un capitolo introduttivo in cui verrà precisato che cosa si intende per fungo e quali si prenderanno in considerazione per l’analisi, fornendo anche una serie di dati quanti-qualitativi sul problema dell’inquinamento ambientale. Nel primo capitolo si tratterà il processo di creazione dei materiali “a base di funghi” e i diversi utilizzi di tali organismi in campo principalmente industriale ma anche in altre economie, mostrando attraverso grafici le varie operations coinvolte nei processi. Col secondo capitolo verranno mostrate alcune valide alternative per riutilizzare i prodotti al termine del loro ciclo di vita. Infine, col terzo capitolo verranno presentate alcune realtà aziendali che, seppur da pochi anni, hanno implementato nuove strategie che comprendono gli utilizzi degli organismi fungini all’interno dei loro processi riuscendo a mantenere, e in alcuni casi a creare, dei veri e propri business stabilmente indipendenti. ​
