Conflicting Aspects in a Courtroom: an Analysis of Ian McEwan's The Children Act

This dissertation examines the novel “The Children Act” by Ian McEwan, particularly focusing on the dichotomy between law and faith and on the moral dilemma originated from the story. The first chapter deals with the figure of the author, both as a writer and as a man. The second chapter moves on to analyse the novel in question, reflecting on its conflicting elements. The last chapter focuses on the analysis of the role of freedom, with its limits, in the lives of the characters and, in particular, of the protagonist.

Questa dissertazione prende in esame il romanzo “The Children Act” di Ian McEwan, ponendo particolare accento sulla dicotomia tra legge e fede e sul dilemma morale che ne scaturisce. Il primo capitolo si concentra sulla figura dell'autore, sia come scrittore che come uomo. Nel secondo capitolo si passa all'analisi vera e propria del romanzo in questione, riflettendo sui suoi elementi conflittuali. L'ultimo capitolo, invece, si sofferma sul ruolo della libertà, con le suoi limitazioni, nelle vite dei personaggi e, in particolare, della protagonista.
