ALAN MOORE’S FROM HELL: A STYLISTIC/SEMIOTIC STUDY OF THE UNCANNY AND VICTORIAN SOCIETY ​

This thesis explores the graphic novel "From Hell" by Alan Moore from a stylistic and semiotic perspective, focusing on the themes of the uncanny and Victorian society. The thesis analyses the visual and narrative elements of the novel to examine how they contribute to the creation of a sense of unease in the reader. Through a detailed study of the graphic novel's art and narrative, this thesis argues that by using elements such as architecture, faces, and symbolism, and by considering the historical and cultural context of Victorian society, the graphic novel From Hell creates an eerie atmosphere and offers a unique perspective on the Victorian era. The thesis also examines how the novel engages with issues of gender, class, and power, offering a comprehensive analysis of "From Hell" that highlights the complexity and richness of the novel's stylistic and semiotic features and contributes to a deeper understanding of its significance as a work of graphic literature. ​
