The Edo period (1603-1868) was a time of tremendous social, political, and economic transformation in Japan, as the country underwent a phase of peace, stability, and prosperity that was unprecedented in its history, due to the emergence of a strong, centralised government, a flourishing economy, and a vibrant culture. It was also a period of great artistic creativity which saw new and unique forms of art unfold, and established art forms were further developed and refined. The Edo period saw the emergence of a wide variety of Japanese art, from painting to lacquerware.
