“The veil of a horror one dare not express”: an introduction to Arthur Machen’s The Great God Pan

This bachelor's thesis briefly introduces the relatively little-known figure of Arthur Machen (1863-1947), the forgotten father of the 20th century weird and horror genre, and his most famous story, The Great God Pan (1894). The first chapter paints a broader picture of the fin-de-siècle Gothic revival of late Victorian literature. The second chapter introduces the life and main works of Arthur Machen, placing emphasis on The Great God Pan, whose plot is outlined in its entirety. The third and final chapter describes some possible thematic paths within the work, with particular interest in the recurring theme of indescribable and unnameable horror, which will have a great influence on the horror literature of the 20th century.

Questa tesi di laurea triennale introduce brevemente la figura relativamente poco conosciuta di Arthur Machen (1863-1947), padre dimenticato del genere weird e horror del XX secolo, e del suo racconto più celebre, The Great God Pan (1894). Il primo capitolo traccia un quadro più ampio della rinnovata fortuna di cui gode la letteratura gotica inglese nella cultura decadente di fine Ottocento, all’interno della quale si innesta la produzione narrativa dell’autore. Il secondo capitolo introduce la vita e le opere principali di Arthur Machen, ponendo l’accento su The Great God Pan, di cui viene delineata la trama nella sua interezza. Il terzo e ultimo capitolo enuclea alcuni possibili percorsi tematici all’interno dell’opera, con particolare interesse sul topos dell’orrore indescrivibile e innominabile, che avrà grande influenza sulla letteratura di genere horror successiva.
