Dark tourism is a rapidly growing form of tourism worldwide, involving more and more people interested in visiting places associated with death, suffering and tragedy. These destinations are often linked to events such as wars, natural or human disasters, genocides or crimes. The purpose of this dissertation is to present and analyse the practice of dark tourism in the contemporary society, as it is considered a postmodern phenomenon fuelled by the media. There are several growing categories of dark tourism: the last chapter discusses the category of nuclear tourism with an in-depth analysis of the case of Chernobyl.
