Social dilemmas arise when individual choices, while sensible from a personal perspective, lead to negative consequences for the larger group. This thesis aims to shed light on the complexities of human decision-making within the context of a fundamental game known as the Prisoners' Dilemma. It presents a scenario where individual rationality can result in less-than-optimal outcomes for the group, using a simple model with two players and two possible actions. After explaining the essential theoretical concepts, I explore specific Prisoners' Dilemma scenarios that can encourage cooperation. One involves a single-shot game with a pre-game communication phase, while the other focuses on the repeated Prisoners' Dilemma.
