Umani e non-umani nella prosa poetica di The Winter Vault di Anne Michaels

The theme of the relationship between humans and nature has always interested literature. Especially in recent years, the attention towards the environmental issues has increased, together with the need to raise people’s awareness regarding the ecological crisis. In this regard, the development of ecocriticism represents an useful approach in order to read literature from an ecological point of view, and thus, to analyse the role and value that the environment, natural elements and non-humans may play in literary works. This thesis focuses on the ecocritical analysis of The Winter Vault by Anne Michaels, an important exponent of contemporary Canadian literature. The author, using her characteristic lyrical prose, narrates the touching story of a married couple that attempts to overcome a sad loss while trying to rebuild their lives. Their stories are intertwined with major historical events, in particular the construction of two mega-dams, the Aswan High Dam and the St. Lawrence Seaway. These massive engineering projects, the outcome of an increasingly advanced technological society, had devastating consequences on the environment and on the inhabitants of those lands. Through the depiction of these historical events and the more intimate episodes typical of the daily life of the characters, it is possible to reflect on the deep and inextricable relationship between human beings and their history, the environment that surrounds them, nature, and how they influence and affect each other.

La relazione tra umani e natura è un tema che ha sempre interessato la letteratura. In particolare negli ultimi anni, l’attenzione verso la tematica ambientale è aumentata, insieme alla necessità di consapevolizzare le persone riguardo alla crisi ecologica. A questo proposito, lo sviluppo dell’ecocriticismo rappresenta un approccio utile per leggere la letteratura in senso ecologico e analizzare il ruolo e il valore che l’ambiente e gli elementi naturali e non umani, possono assumere nelle opere letterarie. Questa tesi si concentra sull’analisi del romanzo The Winter Vault di Anne Michaels, un’importante esponente della letteratura canadese contemporanea, applicando un approccio ecocritico. L’autrice con la sua caratteristica prosa poetica narra la storia toccante di una coppia che cerca di superare un grave lutto e ricostruire la propria vita. Le loro storie si intrecciano con quella di importanti eventi storici, in particolare la costruzione della Diga Alta di Assuan e la St. Lawrence Seaway. Questi due straordinari progetti ingegneristici, risultato di una società sempre più avanzata e tecnologica, ebbero conseguenze devastanti sul territorio e sui suoi abitanti. Tramite la descrizione di questi eventi storici e i momenti più intimi che caratterizzano la vita quotidiana dei protagonisti si riflette sulla profonda e inestricabile relazione che si sviluppa tra gli esseri umani e la loro storia, il loro territorio, la natura e come questi elementi si influenzano a vicenda.
