In this thesis we give a general formulation of string field theory in purely co-algebraic terms. This unifies the different formulations of oriented open-closed string field theory and its classical truncation to spheres and disks in a single framework. The compact co-algebraic framework we present provides a series of tools to facilitate the study of the structure of string field theories. We will discuss in detail the relation between the pure co-algebraic formulation and Maccaferri-Ruffino-Voˇsmera’s formulation of oriented open-closed string field. We will explicitly prove that the co-derivation like objects in Maccaferri-Ruffino-Voˇsmera’s formulation are isomorphic to co-derivations in the pure co-algebraic framework.
