La territorializzazione dei grandi eventi sportivi: il caso delle Nitto ATP Finals a Torino

Major Events represent a fascinating phenomenon of global significance that involves millions of people and has a significant impact on host communities, local economies, and territorial dynamics. This thesis aims to explore and analyze in nine chapters the aspects related to the attraction, management, impacts and legacy of Major Events, with a focus on the Nitto ATP Finals hosted by Turin in the 2021-2022 editions and a detailed analysis of the 2022 one. Major Events, in terms of size and impact, often carry significant consequences for the territory and host communities due to their ability to mobilize significant resources and their influence on the economic and cultural development of the cities and regions involved, representing a unique opportunity for communities to promote their cultural heritage, improve infrastructures, and increase visibility. However, one of the main objectives of this thesis is to critically and reflectively analyze the consequences of choosing to host a Major Event, since while they can bring economic benefits, infrastructural development, and job opportunities, they can also bring environmental, social, and political challenges that require careful and long-term management of the legacies left to the area. The research question underlying this paper is, "How can host communities identify winning strategies to maximize the positive impacts of organizing a traveling Major Sport Event such as Nitto ATP Finals?" In terms of methodology, tools of analysis are employed that draw from the repertoire of approaches and methods in geographical and territorial analyses, with a crucial role played by the concepts of territorialization and governance. The thesis begins by analyzing the dynamics that link Mega Events to host territories, highlighting practical cases and understanding how such events affect local resources and people. The first chapter provides an overview of the typologies of Major Events and their risks and opportunities, highlighting the lack of an unambiguous and shared conception. The second chapter explores their global and itinerant dimensions, focusing on their governance. The third chapter describes the research methodology, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses based on the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. The second half of the thesis studies the general characteristics of the event, the history of the decisions that brought it to Turin, the governance and the realized initiatives related to it. Indeed, the focus is on the event‘s legacies and the analysis of the decisions made for its efficient and effective management, with particular re- reference to the 2022 Turin edition. It then examines how the Turin and Piedmont area can capitalize on this legacy for its future development, with an emphasis on lessons learned from previous editions and implications for local policies for attracting Major Events in the short- and long-term. In the final chapter, some initial thoughts are drawn on the level of territorialization achieved by the Nitto ATP Finals and the long-term effect on the development of the city and the surrounding area. The thesis aims, therefore, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of Major Events and their territorial implications, using this case study to understand how such events can contribute to the progress of host communities and how they can be managed in a way that maximizes long-term benefits.

I Grandi Eventi rappresentano un fenomeno affascinante e di rilevanza globale che coinvolge milioni di persone e ha un impatto significativo su comunità ospitanti, economie locali e dinamiche territoriali. La tesi si propone di esplorare e analizzare gli aspetti legati all'attrazione, gestione, impatti ed eredità dei Grandi Eventi, con un focus sulle Nitto ATP Finals ospitate da Torino nelle edizioni 2021-2022. Essi, in termini di dimensioni e impatto, spesso portano significative conseguenze per il territorio e le comunità ospitanti grazie alla loro capacità di mobilitare notevoli risorse e al loro influsso sullo sviluppo economico e culturale dei territori coinvolti, rappresentando un'opportunità unica per le comunità di promuovere il proprio patrimonio culturale, migliorare le infrastrutture e aumentare la visibilità. Tuttavia uno degli obiettivi della tesi è analizzare in modo critico e riflessivo le conseguenze della scelta di ospitare un Grande Evento poiché, se da un lato possono portare benefici economici, sviluppo infrastrutturale e opportunità di lavoro, dall'altro possono comportare sfide ambientali, sociali e politiche che richiedono una gestione attenta e a lungo termine delle eredità. La domanda di ricerca alla base di questo lavoro è: "Come possono le comunità ospitanti individuare le strategie vincenti per massimizzare gli impatti positivi dell'organizzazione di un Grande Evento sportivo come le ATP Finals?" Come metodologia sono utilizzati strumenti di analisi che fanno riferimento al repertorio di approcci e metodi delle analisi geografiche e territoriali, con un ruolo cruciale dei concetti di territorializzazione e governance. La tesi inizia con l’analisi delle dinamiche che legano i Grandi Eventi ai territori ospitanti, evidenziando casi pratici e comprendendo come tali eventi influiscano sulle risorse locali e sulla popolazione. Il primo capitolo fornisce una panoramica sulle tipologie di Grandi Eventi e sui loro rischi e opportunità, sottolineando la mancanza di una concezione univoca e condivisa. Il secondo capitolo ne esplora la dimensione globale e itinerante, concentrandosi sulla loro governance. Il terzo capitolo descrive la metodologia di ricerca, combinando analisi qualitative, quantitative ed interviste svolte ad attori chiave coinvolti nell’organizzazione della competizione a Torino. Nella seconda metà si studiano le caratteristiche generali dell'evento, la storia delle decisioni che l'hanno portato a Torino, la governance e le iniziative realizzate ad esso collegate. Ci si concentra sull'eredità dell'evento e sull'analisi delle decisioni prese per una gestione efficiente ed efficace, con particolare riferimento all’edizione torinese del 2022. Si esamina come il territorio torinese e piemontese possa capitalizzare quest'eredità per il suo sviluppo futuro con un'enfasi sulle lezioni apprese dalle edizioni precedenti e le implicazioni per le politiche locali di attrazione dei Grandi Eventi nel breve e lungo termine. Nel capitolo finale vengono tratte alcune prime considerazioni sul livello di territorializzazione raggiunto dal torneo e sull'effetto a lungo termine sullo sviluppo della città e del territorio circostante. La tesi mira dunque a fornire una comprensione delle caratteristiche dei Grandi Eventi e delle loro implicazioni territoriali, utilizzando il caso studio per comprendere come possano contribuire al progresso delle comunità ospitanti e come possano essere gestiti per massimizzarne i benefici.
