La Terza Sorella: Rileggendo Anne Brontë nel Bicentenario della Nascita

The thesis focuses on the forgotten genius of Anne Brontë, who is analysed from the literary and biographical point of view. The several differences between Anne and her famous siblings are developed in order to better understand why she did not achieve the same success as her sisters Charlotte and Emily. Starting from her childhood in Haworth and the relationship with her family, the thesis analyses Anne Brontë's works, published under a male pseudonym: Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell (1846), Agnes Grey (1847) and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848). Moreover, attention is given to how they are based on Anne's private life. Furthermore, a considerable meaning is given to the impact that Anne's works had on Victorian society, which considered them as subversive texts. The main goal, however, is to show how Anne Brontë's novels and her poems deserve as much consideration from readers and critics as her famous sisters' books.

La presente tesi tenta di illustrare l'enigmatica figura di Anne Brontë. La scrittrice viene analizzata dal punto di vista biografico e letterario, focalizzandosi sul motivo del suo limitato successo rispetto alle ben più celebri sorelle, Charlotte ed Emily. Anne trasferisce il suo spirito critico e analitico nelle opere che pubblica sotto pseudonimo maschile, le poesie della raccolta Poems by Ellis, Currer and Acton Bell (1846) e i due romanzi, Agnes Grey (1847) e The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848). Nonostante il legame unito e vivo tra le sorelle, il rapporto tra Anne ed Emily è più forte e sembra fonte di gelosia per Charlotte. Quest'ultima gestisce le opere e le pubblicazioni postume delle due sorelle, valorizzando gli scritti di Emily a scapito di Anne. La tesi si focalizza sui motivi e sulle conseguenze della poca fortuna letteraria di Anne, oltre che sulla poca considerazione da parte della critica, che solo recentemente ha contribuito a riconsiderare il talento della sorella Brontë dimenticata.
