This thesis conducts an in-depth analysis of illegal maritime discharges using satellite imagery data from a nonprofit organization monitoring maritime pollution. The study employs three distinct approaches: a country-level analysis, an individual ship-level analysis, and a panel data analysis of 30x30 mile ocean polygons. The results indicate that factors such as the flag of convenience, GDP per capita, and proximity to conflict zones significantly influence the patterns and frequency of maritime pollution. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the nature and sources of illegal maritime discharges, aiming to inform more effective environmental policies and regulations.

Abstract
This thesis conducts an in-depth analysis of illegal maritime discharges using satellite imagery data from a nonprofit organization monitoring maritime pollution. The study employs three distinct approaches: a country-level analysis, an individual ship-level analysis, and a panel data analysis of 30x30 mile ocean polygons. The results indicate that factors such as the flag of convenience, GDP per capita, and proximity to conflict zones significantly influence the patterns and frequency of maritime pollution. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the nature and sources of illegal maritime discharges, aiming to inform more effective environmental policies and regulations.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
