Based on the collected region-level data and applying econometric techniques, this dissertation analyzes the polarization of interests in Russia at the end of the ХХ century. To explain the character of the polarization it uses the results of the Presidential elections in the country in 1996 focusing on votes for the two main candidates: Boris Yeltsin and Gennady Zyuganov. The literature states that the voting patterns could be explained by socioeconomic, and demographic characteristics of the regions. Although some resources found out that the geographical, and demographic factors are valuable in the election analysis, the result of this dissertation is the socioeconomic characteristics played a greater role in the explaining the voting patterns in the 1996 Russian elections shedding light on the explanation of the polarization of the population.
