Le ricchezze di Sir Bertram ad Antigua in Mansfield Park di Jane Austen

My dissertation explores the socio-economic situation of the Bertram family in the novel Mansfield Park by English writer Jane Austen. The novel is set in a historical period in which the wealth and affluent lifestyle of the English upper-middle class are increasingly dependent on the economic exploitation of the overseas territories, in the colonies of the British empire. Any rumour of war or revolt in these faraway lands is also a threat to their stability and to the Establishment's privileges. The Bertram family, too, emblem of the landed gentry and of an ¿ancien régime¿ turns out to be deeply bound to a plantation in Antigua, in the Caribbean, although this fact is just hinted at and appears as a minor event in the novel. Following Edward Said's thought in Culture and Imperialism my study aims to analyse the historical context of the period in which the novel is set and make the untold explicit, using postcolonial critical instruments. It will explore the historical background of Great Britain, the beginning of its colonial expansion and emigration, the British society in the colonial period, the slave trade, the life and working conditions of slaves, and the colonization of the New World, in particular, its religious and commercial aspects.

La presente dissertazione esplora la situazione socio-economica della famiglia Bertram nel romanzo Mansfield Park della scrittrice inglese Jane Austen. Il romanzo è ambientato in un periodo storico in cui le ricchezze e lo stile di vita agiato delle classi medio-alte inglesi sono sempre più dipendenti dai traffici con i possedimenti oltremare nelle colonie dell'impero britannico. Qualsiasi sentore di guerra o rivolta in queste terre lontane minaccia la loro stabilità e i privilegi dell'establishment. Le stesse sorti della famiglia Bertram, emblema della vecchia aristocrazia terriera inglese e di un ¿ancien régime¿ consolidato, risultano profondamente legate a una piantagione in Antigua, sebbene questo fatto sia appena accennato e costituisca un episodio marginale nel romanzo. Seguendo le suggestioni di Edward Said in Culture and Imperialism la mia analisi vuole approfondire il contesto storico del periodo in cui il romanzo si situa ed esplicitare ciò a cui il romanzo indirettamente allude, usando gli strumenti della critica postcoloniale. Si esaminerà il background storico della Gran Bretagna, gli inizi dell'espansione coloniale e le emigrazioni, la società inglese nel periodo coloniale, la tratta degli schiavi, le loro condizioni di vita e di lavoro, e la colonizzazione del Nuovo Mondo, in particolare l'aspetto religioso e commerciale.
