Alzheimer: le potenzialità terapeutiche della musica sui disturbi di memoria

Abstract tesi in inglese: In studies about the Alzheimer's disease progress, the most common form of dementia in Western World, the use of music becomes more and more important, in order to investigate possible positive effects on behaviour, mood and cognitive functions of the patients affected with this disease. The aim of the thesis is to describe and examine particularly some research works focusing on the effects of music on memory disorders, which appear among the first symptoms in this dementia. The main parts of memory were examined, such as autobiographical memory, short-term memory and long-term memory, introducing the hypothesis that new information and new contents could be learned thanks to music. The latter has proved to be undoubtedly a great instrument in Alzheimer's disease therapy and the results were always positive. However some unclear and contrasting points were observed and so they were pointed out in the last part of the thesis, along with the possible developments and future studies examining in a better way which features of music can mainly influence the enhancement of memory in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Negli studi riguardanti il decorso della malattia d'Alzheimer, la forma di demenza senile più diffusa nel mondo occidentale, acquista un ruolo sempre più importante l'impiego della musica, al fine di indagare possibili effetti positivi sul comportamento, sull'umore e sulle funzioni cognitive dei pazienti affetti da tale malattia. Lo scopo di questa tesi è di illustrare e analizzare in particolare alcuni lavori di ricerca che si sono concentrati sugli effetti della musica sui disturbi di memoria, i quali sono tra i primi sintomi a comparire in questa demenza. Sono state indagate le principali componenti della memoria, quali la memoria autobiografica, la memoria a breve termine e la memoria a lungo termine, introducendo l'ipotesi di poter imparare nuove nozioni e nuovi contenuti grazie alla musica. Quest'ultima si è indubbiamente dimostrata un ottimo strumento nel trattamento della malattia d'Alzheimer e i risultati sono sempre stati globalmente positivi. Tuttavia sono stati riscontrati punti poco chiari e discordanti tra i risultati degli esperimenti e sono stati quindi segnalati nell'ultima parte della tesi, insieme ai possibili sviluppi e indagini future, che esplorino meglio quali caratteristiche della musica siano più influenti al fine di migliorare la memoria nei pazienti con demenza d'Alzheimer.
