Abstract

Japanese is a language with a long history of linguistic loans, from China, in ancient times and from the West, in recent times, since, as claimed by a Japanese native who participate in my questionnaire "Japanese are thought to have flexibility to chew and utilize multicultural multilingual as their own [sic.]¿. The purpose of my dissertation is to analyze the gairaigo (i.e. words of English origin), after a brief introduction of their presence and spread in Japan, and an outline of their main functions. For this reason, I submitted a questionnaire on the perception of diffusion and use of English loanwords to 31 native Japanese speakers, in order to find out in which contexts and sectors they are more used, whether there are problems of understanding between the new and the old generation or because of the writing system that uses katakana and what is the opinion of the natives on the rapid increase of English borrowed words in Japanese society.
