Tradurre la violenza in Joyce Carol Oates

The aim of this thesis is to address the theme of violence in the work of Joyce Carol Oates through the translation of a short story, Deceit, still unpublished in Italy, in an attempt to illustrate how is not possible to choose only a translation strategy. The first chapter provide an analysis of Oates' poetics in reference to some central themes in the numerous works published by the writer and her vision of violence, the second will be entirely dedicated to the translation of the short story, and the last one is focused on the analysis of some important realias that are present in the text, with particular attention to culturally ¿ embedded social references.

Nel corso di questo lavoro verrà analizzata la tematica della violenza all'interno dell'opera di Joyce Carol Oates attraverso la traduzione di un racconto, ¿Deceit¿, ancora inedito in Italia, nel tentativo di illustrare come non sia possibile attuare una sola strategia traduttiva. Il primo capitolo analizzerà la poetica di Oates in riferimento ad alcune tematiche centrali nelle numerose opere pubblicate dalla scrittrice e il concetto oatesiano di violenza, il secondo sarà interamente dedicato alla traduzione del racconto, infine ci si concentrerà sull'analisi della traduzione di alcuni importanti realia presenti nel testo, con una particolare attenzione per i riferimenti sociali culturally ¿ embedded.
