This dissertation explores the evolution of African American Vernacular English and the influence of its slang on the U.S. mainstream culture; it outlines the main features of AAVE: a brief description of its origins, phonology, grammar and lexicon. The source of this case study is the feature film Straight Outta Compton, which displays several examples of AAVE and black slang. The last part focuses on a few specific words typical of the 'black ghetto', it is a corpus-based analysis of six swear words, namely ass, bitch, fuck, muthafucka, nigga and shit, extracted from the Straight Outta Compton movie script through the WordSmith Tools software.
