JANE AUSTEN E LA CORRISPONDENZA EPISTOLARE. LA FUNZIONE NARRATIVA DELLE LETTERE ALL'INTERNO DELLE SUE OPERE

The thesis proposes a study on the letters function in the Jane Austen's works, in the Juvenilia, the epistolary novel Lady Susan, Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park. Through a study of the cited texts and an analysis of the letters present in them, the aim of the thesis is to trace and demonstrate the lines of the development of a precise narrative technique in the writer's works, which after a first parodic approach to the genre of the epistolary novel in Juvenilia and the subsequent attempt represented by Lady Susan, in her following works chooses to depart from the model constituted by the epistolary novel. In Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park the letters are integrated into the narration and become a literary device to which the author attributes different functions: they are essential elements to start the narration in Mansfield Park and introduce new characters in Pride and Prejudice, communicate information, reveal crucial narrative nodes and are the means by which the author inserts new turns that help the plot to progress.

La tesi propone uno studio sulla funzione delle lettere nelle opere di Jane Austen, nelle seguenti opere: I Juvenilia, il romanzo epistolare Lady Susan, Pride and Prejudice e infine Mansfield Park. Attraverso uno studio dei testi citati e un analisi delle lettere in essi presenti, lo scopo della tesi è quello di tracciare e di dimostrare le linee dello sviluppo di una precisa tecnica narrativa nelle opere della scrittrice, che dopo un primo approccio in forma parodica al genere del romanzo epistolare nei Juvenilia e il successivo tentativo rappresentato da Lady Susan, nelle sue opere sceglie di discostarsi dal modello costituito dalle epistolary novel. In Pride and Prejudice e Mansfield Park le lettere vengono integrate nella narrazione e divengono un'espediente letterario a cui l'autrice attribuisce differenti funzioni: sono antefatto indispensabile per avviare la narrazione in Mansfield Park, presentano personaggi in Pride and Prejudice, comunicano informazioni, disvelano nodi narrativi cruciali e sono il mezzo attraverso cui l'autrice inserisce nuove svolte che aiutano la trama a progredire.
