In the world we are living today, the importance of creating a persuasive speech is always more necessary, especially when it comes to politics. The topics considered by this field have become more crucial and tough: therefore, mostly of what happens behind the scenes cannot be revealed. The most actual topic which is extremely affecting our lives is terrorism: we hear about it every day. But is what we hear the actual truth? Is the information 100% reliable? The decision of investigating this topic has been made because of the importance of knowing the world we live in. Many studies have been conducted on language engineering analysis and media strategies, especially to understand why a certain speech contains specific words instead of others, what is the reason behind the choice of building up a speech in a certain way. The subject of whatever analysis needs to be firstly defined: even though it might look easy, terrorism is not an easy word to be defined. Being the very first matter of the discussion, as terrorism is the context of our analysis, we will firstly try to find a proper definition for this word, asking ourselves: is it even possible? Focusing on the Islamic State, the amount of attacks held in France between 2015 and 2016 gave us the boost to conduct the analysis, as we believe that people cannot just sit in front of a television and watch the news. This period was also the restricted area of the analysis itself: by narrowing the period of time to investigate, it should be easier to focus the attention on the goal of the analysis. Starting from here, in the following discussion we will conduct a specific analysis defined as corpus based: once choosing a group of speeches held my three American institutions (White House, Department of State and Department of Defense), we will analyse them carefully with the help of a computer software, which will give us the tools to create hypothesis and theories based on the results found. Will these hypothesis and theories match with the idea we made when reading the speeches for the first time? The aim of the dissertation is to show how many concepts can be concealed behind a speech: the data collected are supposed to present certain results that will match with our ¿blind¿ idea. At the end of the dissertation we will discuss if the goal has been reached or not. The best way to start the analysis is to wonder: is it true that the information we are given every day are manipulated? This is what we will try to prove.
