"Kuvaa na kuvalia maana yake nini?" Immagini e significati del corpo nudo e rivestito in Tanzania.

This thesis is the result of a research conducted in Tanzania. In this dissertation I will examine how costumes, clothes and body-construction change during different ages, putting the focus on the symbols which are involved in this process. Clothes, costumes and bodies express the social and cultural reality, and design the dominance systems and the relations between humans. This thesis will be divided into three chapters: analyzing Barthes and Saussures' theories the first theoretical chapter will discuss over body and costume as linguistic and semiological systems. Then the second-one, through and historical approach over Tanganyika and Tanzania, will point out the significance system that exist in the decoration of the body; and finally the third chapter will focus on the contemporary fashion environment in the country. After the conclusion and the bibliography, you will find the interviews that I took with some tailors and fashion designers during my period of research in Tanzania, that were essential for the development of my dissertation.

Questa tesi è il risultato di un lavoro sul campo svolto in Tanzania. In questo elaborato si cercherà di analizzare come i costumi, i vestiti e la costruzione del corpo cambino nelle diverse epoche storiche in Tanzania, mettendo in luce l'ampio sistema di simboli che sono coinvolti in questo processo. Vestiti, costumi e corpi esprimono la realtà sociale e culturale, e modellano sistemi di potere e relazioni. La tesi si suddividerà in tre capitoli: il primo di natura teorica che analizzerà, attraverso i ragionamenti di Barthes e Saussure, il corpo e l'abito come sistemi linguistici e semiologici. Seguirà poi un secondo capitolo che attraverso un'analisi storica del Tanganyika e della Tanzania, metterà in luce il sistema di significati che si celano nell'ornare il corpo, e si proseguirà quindi con un terzo capitolo che porrà il suo focus sul mondo della moda contemporanea nel paese. Dopo la conclusione e la bibliografia verranno riportate le interviste con stilisti e sarti raccolte durante il periodo di ricerca sul campo, che sono state essenziali per lo svolgimento del lavoro.
