Gli aspetti del Brummie in Peaky Blinders: un’analisi linguistica

Parlato principalmente nella città di Birmingham e nei suoi dintorni, il Brummie è uno dei dialetti regionali più conosciuti dell’Inghilterra. Sebbene la sua esistenza sia ampiamente nota, sino ad ora non è stato esaminato con sufficiente attenzione e molti parlanti madrelingua sembrano non considerarlo particolarmente presitigioso. Inoltre, nel panorama cinematografico, tale dialetto è raramente rappresentato, probabilmente perché la morfologia del Brummie e le sue caratteristiche lessicali differiscono considerevolmente da quelli dell’inglese standard. Tuttavia, la serie TV Peaky Blinders è riuscita a portare all’attenzione del pubblico il Brummie, nonché la città di Birmingham e la regione del West Midlands, le quali sono diventate attrazioni turistiche per l’intera comunità di spettatori della serie TV. La seguente tesi mira a identificare e illustrare le caratteristiche di tale dialetto, prestando particolare attenzione alla sua morfologia e al suo lessico. La dissertazione si concentra sulle caratteristiche incluse nei sei episodi della prima stagione della serie TV sopraccitata, essendo la principale fonte di dati per l’indagine linguistica ivi condotta. Fornisce inoltre un’introduzione alla città di Birmingham così come la trama della prima stagione, il contesto storico e la storia della gang realmente esistita e da cui lo sceneggiatore ha tratto ispirazione.

Brummie English is one of the best-known regional dialects of England and it is based in and around the city of Birmingham. Although its existence is widely known, it is rather under-studied and many native English speakers do not seem to consider it prestigious. Moreover, in the cinematographic landscape, this dialect is rarely shown, probably because Brummie morphology and its lexical aspects are very different from those of Standard English. Nevertheless, the TV series Peaky Blinders managed to bring Brummie English to the audience’s attention. As a consequence, the city of Birmingham and the West Midland region became tourist attractions for the whole Peaky Blinders’ community of spectators. This dissertation aims to identify and illustrate the different aspects of the Brummie dialect, with special attention paid to its morphology and the lexis. It focuses on the features included in the six episodes of the first season of the TV series Peaky Blinders, the main source of data for this linguistic investigation. It also provides an introduction to the city of Birmingham as well as the plot of the first season of the TV series, the historical background and the real-life gang from which the screenwriter took inspiration.
