La maternità in questione. Diventare una madre nigeriana dal contesto di partenza all'arrivo in Italia

There are many Nigerian women who leave every year to migrate to Italy with the hope of finding a more promising and free future, only to end up in human trafficking. Most of them arrive with children, while others conceive them in the destination country, despite the precarious condition of being trafficked. Following several contacts with Nigerian mothers, the aim of this study is to investigate the reasons why a young woman gives birth to children, despite her severe and limiting economic and social situation. In this regard, the research question is: what triggers the desire to be a mother in these women? Or why is having children an urgent priority? To answer these questions, I researched books and articles that provided a background of the meaning of motherhood in Nigerian culture, what their migration path through trafficking was like, and finally, what it meant for these women to be mothers in Italy. In addition, I collected valuable testimonies from a Nigerian girl who, in parallel, told me about her experience as a mother. The results highlight a strong drive that society in Nigeria gives women to procreate and have offspring, a cultural legacy that they carry with them through the journey to Italy and which has various implications for them and their children. In addition, the lifestyle proposals of the host country and the implications this lifestyle has on the races and their children emerge. It would be useful to continue research in this area in the future, so that the story of Nigerian prostitutes is known and reported from multiple sources. This is in order to offer protection and hope to these troubled lives.

Sono numerose le donne nigeriane che partono ogni anno per migrare verso l’Italia con la speranza di incontrare un futuro più promettente e libero, ritrovandosi poi a finire nel traffico di esseri umani. La maggior parte di queste arriva con dei figli, mentre altre li concepiscono nel paese di destinazione, malgrado la condizione precaria che implica l’essere vittime di tratta. In seguito a diversi contatti con madri nigeriane, l’obiettivo di questo studio è indagare le ragioni che spingono una giovane donna a mettere al mondo dei bambini, nonostante le gravi e limitanti situazioni economiche e sociali. A questo proposito la domanda di ricerca è quella che segue: cosa scatena in queste donne il desiderio di essere madri? O come mai, l’avere figli risulta essere una priorità improrogabile? Per rispondere a queste domande mi sono documentata per mezzo di libri e articoli che fornissero un background del significato della maternità nella cultura nigeriana, come fosse il loro percorso di migrazione attraverso la tratta e infine, cosa significasse per queste donne essere madri in Italia. Inoltre, ho raccolto preziose testimonianze di una ragazza nigeriana che, in parallelo, mi raccontava la sua esperienza di madre. I risultati mettono in luce una forte spinta che la società in Nigeria dà alle donne al fine di procreare e di avere una progenie, retaggio culturale che esse portano con sé attraverso il viaggio verso l’Italia e che ha varie implicazioni su di loro e sui loro figli. Inoltre emergono le proposte di vita del paese di accoglienza e le implicazioni che questo stile di vita ha sulle razze e sui loro figli. Sarebbe utile che in futuro si continui a fare ricerca in questo ambito, in modo che la storia delle prostitute nigeriane venga conosciuta e denunciata da più fonti. Questo al fine di offrire protezione e speranza a queste vite tormentate.
