Copyright is a type of intellectual property that provides the holder with the exclusive right to copy, distribute, alter, display, and perform a creative work, often for a certain amount of time and for the duration of their ownership of the copyright. Not only has the author undertaken the act of distributing, copying, exhibiting, etc., but so-called "intermediaries" who function as a connection and facilitate interaction between third parties have also done so. This research investigates the history of intermediaries in the context of international copyright, beginning with their beginnings and culminating with the role that internet platforms currently play as intermediaries. The research begins with the origins of intermediaries and ends with the current function of internet platforms as intermediaries. In order to offer a legal perspective on this event, I will describe the applicable legal framework that corresponds to each chapter, which corresponds to each phase in the process of the formation of the figure of the intermediary. In conclusion, I will paint a picture of the realities according to my utopian vision of them, creating a legal and economic framework within which the two sides may coexist and work together for the benefit of the author. This dissertation aims to provide a comprehensive framework of the ever-evolving function of intermediaries and to investigate the expansion of the legal world in connection to several aspects, one of which is technology. Additionally, the dissertation will investigate the relationship between these two topics.
