Cambiamenti in ambito funerario tra il tardo antico e il Medioevo: alcuni esempi piemontesi

The aim of the research is to analyze some cemeteries of the late ancient and early medieval period in Piedmont, and to observe the relationship between them and the structures pertaining to the roman urban centers that are nearby. The focus is in particular on the reuse of the aforementioned structures in a funerary key, in the context of the broader transformations that affected this area from the 5th century AD. on. The dissertation begins by offering a general picture of the cities of Cisalpine Gaul in the period of the end of the Roman Empire, focusing in particular on the difference between the centers that suffered abandonment phenomena and those that instead present a "continuity of life ". It is also noted that it is not always possible to make a clear distinction between the two situations. Subsequently, the cemeteries of late ancient and early medieval age that have developed in these cities, often within the walls, are analyzed individually. This phenomenon is a symptom of a radical change compared to the Roman funerary customs, which strictly relegated the necropolis outside the walls. Finally, comparisons are made between the cases analyzed above, highlighting their similarities and differences, to draw some conclusions regarding the funeral environment in Piedmont from the 5th century AD. on. The themes of abandonment and continuity will also be treated again, revised in the light of what has been observed about cemeteries, to understand if they can help in some way to clarify these two phenomena

Lo scopo della ricerca è analizzare alcuni cimiteri di epoca tardo antica e alto medievale del Piemonte, e osservare il rapporto che intercorre tra essi e le strutture pertinenti a centri urbani di epoca romana che si trovano nei pressi. Ci si concentra in particolare sul riutilizzo delle suddette strutture in chiave funeraria, nel contesto delle più ampie trasformazioni che interessarono questo ambito dal V secolo d.C. in poi. La dissertazione inizia offrendo un quadro generale delle città della Gallia Cisalpina nel periodo della fine dell’impero romano, ponendo in particolar modo l’attenzione sulla differenza tra i centri che subirono fenomeni di abbandono e quelli che invece possono essere definiti “a continuità di vita”. Si nota inoltre come non sempre si possa effettuare una distinzione netta tra le due situazioni. In seguito, sono analizzati singolarmente i cimiteri di età tardo antica e alto medievale che si sono sviluppati presso queste città, spesso all’interno della cinta muraria, fenomeno che è sintomo di un radicale cambiamento rispetto alle consuetudini funerarie romane, che relegavano strettamente le necropoli al di fuori delle mura. Infine, si effettuano dei confronti tra i casi analizzati in precedenza, evidenziandone similitudini e differenze, per trarre alcune conclusioni riguardo all’ambito funerario in Piemonte dal V secolo d.C. in poi. Si ritorna inoltre al tema dell’abbandono e della continuità, rivisto alla luce di quanto osservato riguardo ai cimiteri, per capire se essi possano aiutare in qualche modo a fare chiarezza su questi due fenomeni.
