“E che spesso l’orror va col diletto”. Protagonisti e temi della pittura dei Bamboccianti.

The paper deals with the artistic phenomenon of Bambocciata, analyzing its characteristics and developments in the context of Roman society in the seventeenth century. The first chapter analyzes a collection of sources fine-tuned in chronological order of the most important authors of the critical-literary landscape of time. Filippo Baldinucci and Giovan Battista Passeri, two of the most informed and cultured personalities, are the opening line to this review. There are also testimonies of Italian artists, such as Salvator Rosa and Andrea Sacchi, with letters sent to master Francesco Albani, and foreigners, including the Dutch painter Arnold Houbraken; and then again Carlo Cesare Malvasia and Giovan Pietro Bellori. In the first section of the second chapter, the studies carried out in the last century by Giuliano Briganti, who, following an exhibition on the subject of which he edited the catalog in 1950, published an entirely dedicated monograph in 1982. This important work has been joined by the contributions of Roberto Longhi, Tomaso Montanari and Francis Haskell. The second part of the chapter deals, with a more personal approach, with the different declinations of bambocciante painting using the sources. The third, fourth and fifth chapters are dedicated to the deepening of the most peculiar aspects of the Bambocciata: the contextualization of the phenomenon, the protagonists and the places that characterize it. Finally, a section dedicated to the works of the main authors taken into account in this work follows, genre scenes, from the most varied settings, taverns, which are a very characteristic subject, as well as fairs and markets, but also artisans at work and beggars intent on asking for charity, and then again scams, fights and prostitution.

L'elaborato affronta il fenomeno artistico della Bambocciata, andando ad analizzarne le caratteristiche e gli sviluppi nel contesto della società romana nel XVII secolo. Il primo capitolo analizza una raccolta di fonti messa a punto in ordine cronologico degli autori più importanti del panorama critico-letterario del tempo. Filippo Baldinucci e Giovan Battista Passeri, due delle personalità più informate e colte, fanno da apri fila a questa rassegna. Vi sono anche le testimonianze di artisti italiani, come Salvator Rosa e Andrea Sacchi, con le lettere inviate al maestro Francesco Albani, e stranieri, tra i quali il pittore olandese Arnold Houbraken; e poi ancora Carlo Cesare Malvasia e Giovan Pietro Bellori. Si sono esaminati, nella prima sezione del secondo capitolo, gli studi compiuti nel secolo scorso da Giuliano Briganti, il quale, in seguito ad una mostra sull'argomento di cui nel 1950 cura il catalogo, pubblica, nel 1982 una monografia interamente dedicata. Questo importante lavoro è stato affiancato ai contributi di Roberto Longhi, Tomaso Montanari e Francis Haskell. La seconda parte del capitolo tratta, con un approccio più personale, delle diverse declinazioni della pittura bambocciante avvalendosi delle fonti. I capitoli terzo, quarto e quinto, sono dedicati all'approfondimento degli aspetti più peculiari della Bambocciata: la contestualizzazione del fenomeno, i protagonisti e i luoghi che lo caratterizzano. Segue, infine, una sezione dedicata alle opere dei principali autori prese in considerazione in questo lavoro, scene di genere, dalle ambientazioni più varie, osterie, che sono un soggetto molto caratteristico, cosi come fiere e mercati, ma anche artigiani al lavoro e mendicanti intenti a chiedere la carità, e poi ancora truffe, risse e prostituzione.
