La figura della donna all'interno della Restoration Society: lo sguardo di Aphra Behn

This dissertation aims at presenting and investigating the important social issues inherent to the condition of marginality and subordination of women belonging to the Restoration Society, a society in which women had many duties and very few rights. In particular, I have addressed this topic by subjecting to a careful and accurate analysis the female characters who are present in the plays of the English writer and playwright Aphra Behn: The Rover or The Banish’d Cavaliers and Sir Patient Fancy: A Comedy. In the first chapter, I focus on the figure of Aphra Behn as the first woman of English literature to earn a living through her job as a writer. Moreover, I give a general picture of the situation of women in the society of the 17th century. In the second and third chapters, through the analysis of the two plays mentioned above, I present themes such as rebellion against the patriarchal system, violence against women, prostitution, arranged marriages for interest and, finally, the education and cultural level of women.

Questa tesi ha lo scopo di presentare ed analizzare le importanti problematiche sociali inerenti alla condizione di marginalità e subalternità delle donne appartenenti alla Restoration Society, società in cui le donne avevano molti doveri e ben pochi diritti. In particolare, ho affrontato tale argomento sottoponendo ad un’attenta ed accurata analisi i personaggi femminili presenti all’interno delle opere teatrali della scrittrice e drammaturga inglese Aphra Behn: The Rover or The Banish’d Cavaliers e Sir Patient Fancy: A Comedy. Nel primo capitolo, mi sono focalizzata sulla figura di Aphra Behn in quanto prima donna della letteratura inglese a guadagnarsi da vivere attraverso il suo lavoro di scrittrice. Inoltre, ho fornito un quadro generale sulla condizione delle donne nella società del Seicento. Nel secondo e terzo capitolo, attraverso l’analisi delle due opere sopra citate, ho presentato nel dettaglio temi quali la ribellione contro il sistema patriarcale, la violenza sulle donne, la prostituzione, i matrimoni combinati per interesse e, infine, l’istruzione e il livello di cultura delle donne.
