La lunetta del portale destro di Sant’Andrea a Vercelli

The subject of this thesis was the lunette located on the right portal of the abbey of Sant’Andrea in Vercelli. Starting from the studies and analyzes that have seen her as a protagonist from the 1800s to the 2000s, the work evolves into a historical-artistic analysis of sculpture. The location of the lunette on the facade has long been disputed, creating numerous debates between historians who date it between the second quarter of the thirteenth century and others who want it posthumously included in the restoration works of the first half of the nineteenth century. The purpose of the work was to recognize the lunette as a medieval work, placed on the façade since the origins of the construction site in the thirteenth century, through an extensive investigation of the context and the years in which the basilica was built. With a detailed search among the Vercelli archives and collections, an attempt was made to shed light on points still in the shadow of this so controversial work. ​

Oggetto di studio di questa tesi è stata la lunetta collocata sul portale destro dell’abbazia di Sant’Andrea in Vercelli. Partendo dagli studi e dalle analisi che l’hanno vista protagonista a partire dal 1800 sino agli anni 2000, l’elaborato si evolve in un’analisi storico- artistica della scultura. La collocazione della lunetta in facciata è stata a lungo contesa, creando numerosi dibattiti tra studiosi che la datano fra il secondo quarto del Duecento e altri che la vogliono inserimento postumo ai lavori di restauro della prima metà dell’Ottocento. Lo scopo del lavoro è stato quello, attraverso un'ampia indagine del contesto e degli anni in cui la basilica è stata costruita, di riconoscere la lunetta come opera medievale, collocata in facciata sin dalle origini del cantiere nel Duecento. Con una puntuale ricerca tra gli archivi e i fondi vercellesi, si è cercato di fare luce su punti ancora in ombra di quest’opera così controversa. ​
