TRADUZIONE DALL'INGLESE PER FINI MEDICI: IL CASO DEL TRATTAMENTO DEL CANCRO

This work deals with translation for medical purposes and, in particular, it focuses on texts talking about cancer treatment. The aim of this dissertation is to clarify the features that characterize specialized translation and the differences which appear at different levels of communication depending on the aim of the text and the expectations of readers. In order to do this, two texts presenting different characteristics and addressing different categories of readership are translated and analyzed: an article from the American scientific magazine Science and an excerpt from a textbook of medicine, i.e. the Oxford Textbook of Medicine. The work is structured into three chapters. The first one, after making a distinction between specialized translation and literary translation, describes the main strategies which can be adopted during the translation process and the variations translators needs to make. The second chapter briefly illustrates how specialized languages have developed over the centuries and subsequently analyzes specialized discourse from terminology to their textual organization. The last chapter carries out a detailed analysis of the main features of the two translated texts (comparing them) and provides a comment on the most significant problems and challenges encountered during the translation process.
