Atlante e le fonti antiche

This thesis deals with the mythological figure of Atlas. In the first paragraphs I focused on the Homeric and Hesiodic traditions of this character. Starting with some verses extrapolated from the ancient sources, obtained through the consultation of works from different researchers, I examined the versions that mention Atlas related to the famous tale of the Titans rebellion against Zeus, and to their defeat and punishment. After a section dedicated to the Titan's genealogy, I examined an Herodotus' story that mentions a mountain named Atlas; from here I dealt with some problems about the localization of the character analyzed. In the end I discussed the story of the Hesperides' myth and the role played by Atlas in the tale. For every section I started by reading the ancient sources and then examining them through my observations and those of different researches.

Questa tesi ha per oggetto la figura mitologica di Atlante. Nei primi paragrafi mi sono concentrata sulle tradizioni omerica ed esiodea del personaggio. Partendo da alcuni versi estrapolati dalle fonti antiche, attraverso la consultazione dei lavori di diversi studiosi, ho esaminato le versioni che menzionano Atlante in rapporto alla vicenda della rivolta dei Titani contro Zeus, alla loro sconfitta e alla relativa punizione. Dopo una sezione dedicata alla genealogia del Titano, ho preso in esame un racconto erodoteo che menziona un monte denominato Atlante; da qui ho affrontato alcuni problemi sulla localizzazione del personaggio in questione. Infine ho trattato la vicenda del mito delle Esperidi e il ruolo svolto da Atlante nella storia. Per ognuna delle sezioni sono partita dalla lettura delle fonti antiche e poi le ho esaminate attraverso le mie constatazioni e quelle di diversi studiosi.
