Agli albori della prosa hindī: il Prem Sāgar

The subject of the thesis is the Prem Sāgar ("Ocean of Love"), a Hindi prose work composed by Lallū Lāl between 1803 and 1810. The work had an educational purpose and was addressed to the students of Fort William College in Calcutta, the institute founded in 1800 for the education and the learning of Neo-Indian languages for British administrators. This institute played a very important role in the development of modern Hindī prose and in its standardization, as well as the Prem Sāgar itself did. The text had a huge public success and it is still very popular nowadays. The central part of the thesis consists of the translation of the first 20 chapters of Prem Sāgar; based on the first complete edition of the work, dating back to 1810. The translation is preceded by a linguistic framework of Northern India in the early nineteenth century and by an introduction of the author, the text and its sources. The translation is followed by a comparison between the first pages of Prem Sāgar in the first edition and in three following editions, as an example of the linguistic evolution that occurred to the text with the transmission to the printing: an evolution that has now two-centuries of history.

La tesi ha per oggetto il Prem Sāgar ("Oceano d'amore"), un'opera in prosa hindī composta da Lallū Lāl tra il 1803 e il 1810 a scopo didattico per gli studenti del Fort William College di Calcutta, l'istituto fondato nel 1800 per la formazione e l'apprendimento delle lingue neo indiane per gli amministratori britannici che ebbe un ruolo molto importante per lo sviluppo della prosa hindī moderna e per la sua standardizzazione, così come lo stesso Prem Sāgar. L'opera ebbe un enorme successo di pubblico ed è ancora oggi molto popolare. La parte centrale della tesi consiste nella traduzione dei primi 20 capitoli del Prem Sāgar, basata sulla prima edizione completa dell'opera, risalente al 1810. La traduzione è preceduta da un quadro linguistico dell'India settentrionale all'inizio del XIX secolo e da una presentazione dell'autore, del testo e delle sue fonti. Segue la traduzione un confronto tra le prime pagine del Prem Sāgar nella prima edizione e in tre edizioni successive, come esempio dell'evoluzione linguistica subita dal testo durante la sua trasmissione a mezzo stampa: un'evoluzione che ha ormai due secoli di storia.
