This paper defines participatory budgeting as a big field of progress in democracy and urban growth in Brazil and elsewhere. It draws on the experience of 10 municipalities in Latin America, selected based on the diversity of their participatory budgeting experience and their degree of innovation. My research offers a comprehensive overview that can be utilized in participatory budgeting in terms of the number of funds being discussed, the scope of local citizens' power and mode of participation, the local government partnership, the degree of institutionalization, and the viability of the mechanism, and it considers the problems posed by this complex range of possibilities.
