Joyce, Ulysses, Aeolus: il Linguaggio tra Retorica e Profezia

We argue that the crisis of the values of modernity is reflected in the literary work of James Joyce in search of a deep language, able to convey the sense of indeterminacy of reality. The analysis of the Aeolus chapter, in which is exhibited a wide range of tropes and figures of speech, made it possible to capture the dramatic form of words between the automatism of empty rhetorical device and the fruitfulness of aesthetic creation, releasing the language from regulatory restrictions and from preconceived definitions. The myth, the classical canon, the tradition of the novel are subjected to a systematic reversal process whereby the artist produces new meanings and reveals the impenetrable aspects of existence. The authenticity of the word gives a prophetic role to the artist, whereby he highlights the contradictions of the present time, without providing a future or impose an absolute and unequivocal truth. The interlacement of prophetic inspiration and artistic creation redefines the peculiar characteristics of the history of the Irish people, suggests a new way to read the text and the reality, opening interpretative horizons whereby a particular local experience can take on a universal undertone.

La crisi di valori della modernità si traduce nel lavoro letterario di James Joyce nella ricerca di un linguaggio vivo, capace di esprimere il senso di indeterminatezza della realtà. L'analisi del capitolo Aeolus, in cui viene esibito un ampio ventaglio di tropi e figure del discorso, ha permesso di cogliere la drammaticità della forma delle parole tra l'automatismo del vuoto artificio retorico e la fecondità della creazione estetica, liberando il linguaggio dai vincoli normativi e dalle definizioni precostituite. Il mito, il canone classico, la tradizione del romanzo vengono sottoposti a un sistematico processo di inversione con cui l'artista produce nuovi significati e rivela gli aspetti impenetrabili dell'esistenza. L'autenticità della parola conferisce all'artista un ruolo profetico, con cui mette in evidenza le contraddizioni del tempo presente, senza prevedere un futuro né imporre una verità assoluta e univoca. L'intreccio tra ispirazione profetica e creazione artistica ridefinisce i tratti peculiari della storia del popolo irlandese, suggerisce un nuovo modo di leggere il testo e la realtà, aprendo orizzonti interpretativi con i quali un'esperienza particolare e locale può assumere una connotazione universale.
