'Le Guide', l'araba fenice della letteratura valdostana: alla scoperta dell'opera romanzesca di Léon-Marius Manzetti

The subject of this dissertation is about the discovering of Léon-Marius Manzetti's novel: Le Guide. This book, believed to be missing for about a century, was rediscovered by the writer Teresa Charles in 2011. Manzetti is now considered one of the best poets, playwriters and novelists of the first XXe century in Aosta Valley, but unfortunately he died too soon, at the age of thirty-tree. Thanks to the valuable sources of his autobiography we managed to retrace his adventures, his trips around the Orient and his entire venturesome life. The first chapter includes the history of Aosta Valley's novel and its most significant authors. Throughout the analysis of the works and the pieces, we noticed Manzetti's great passion for literature: for him it was his biggest inspiration, so much that he became professor. Furthermore, the second chapter deals with the novel's rediscovery by the writer Teresa Charles, with a little interview. In addition, we went through the Diaspora of the Alpine regions, phenomenon caused by the fascist regime, who forced million of artists to cross the ocean in search of freedom. Then we tackled the subject of the literary genre of the novel, classifying it as Bildungsroman: this process allowed us to better understand the evolution of the novel in the European area. Ultimately, we decided to conclude the dissertation with the translation of some chapters of Le Guide: this work gave me the chance to test my translation skills and knowledges and to analyse Manzetti's writing in depth: his characters, the topics covered in the novel, his love towards mountains, has enabled us to get to know better the author.
