“How to get away with murder” Le discriminazioni contro gli afroamericani nella storia degli Stati Uniti e la loro rappresentazione in Netflix

This elaborate focuses on the history of African-Americans who have experienced violence and discrimination over the centuries. It is presented an overview of the history of African-Americans from the slave trade to the achievement of civil rights with Martin Luther King. With the Dred Scott case examines the discrimination that blacks have experienced in the justice system. Dred Scott is a black slave who, with his master, moves to Illinois, a free state in which there is no slavery. The Missouri Compromise provides the freedom for all people in a free state, and for this Dred Scott makes a case against his master's wife. This case is very important because it is taken to the Supreme Court, which rules in favor of Dred Scott's master's wife. Chapter three connects to the first in that I analyze a TV series, How to get away with murder, in which there is a justice case that is taken to the Supreme Court, like the Dred Scott case. In the TV series, the lawyer Annalise Keating is convinced that African-Americans do not have an appropriate defense and that public defender's offices do not defend their clients in a suitable way. For this reason Keating files a class action lawsuit, and her exemplary case is Nate Lahey Sr, an African-American man forced into solitary confinement in prison who did not get a proper defense. In the second chapter, before I cover How to get away with murder, I talk about TV series in which African-American characters are featured. I analyze how these characters are included in the society being represented. In some of the series that I cite are present episodes of racism and I analyze how these are represented inside each TV series.

Questo elaborato si concentra sulla storia degli afroamericani che, nel corso dei secoli, hanno subito violenze e discriminazioni. Viene presentata una panoramica della storia degli afroamericani dal commercio degli schiavi fino al raggiungimento dei diritti civili con Martin Luther King. Con il caso Dred Scott si analizzano le discriminazioni che i neri hanno subito in ambito giudiziario. Dred Scott è uno schiavo nero che con il suo padrone si sposta nell’Illinois, uno stato libero nel quale non è presente la schiavitù. Il Missouri Compromise prevede la libertà per tutte le persone che si trovano in uno stato libero e per questo Dred Scott intenta una causa verso la moglie del suo padrone. Questa causa è molto importante perché viene portata alla Corte Suprema che si esprime a favore della moglie del padrone di Dred Scott. Il capitolo tre si lega al primo in quanto analizzo una serie tv, How to get away with murder, nella quale è presente un caso giudiziario che viene portato alla Corte Suprema, come il caso Dred Scott. Nella serie tv l’avvocato Annalise Keating è convinta che gli afroamericani non hanno una difesa adeguata e che gli avvocati d’ufficio non difendono in modo adatto i loro assistiti. Per questo motivo la Keating intenta una class action e il suo caso esemplare è Nate Lahey Sr, un uomo afroamericano costretto all’isolamento in carcere che non ha ottenuto una difesa appropriata. Nel secondo capitolo, prima di trattare How to get away with murder, parlo delle serie tv nelle quali sono presenti personaggi afroamericani. Analizzo come questi personaggi sono inseriti all’interno della società che viene rappresentata. In alcune delle serie che cito sono presenti episodi di razzismo e analizzo come questi vengono rappresentati all’interno di ogni serie tv.
