Comunicazione in guerra, il caso della televisione

The thesis analyzes the evolution and the military use of television. Starting from 60s where the medium has reached its full maturity to its role in Vietnam conflict, analyzing the “living room war” myth and several accidents which has put the U.S in a bad light and how the television (reporting journalists several evidence) has contributed to Americans surrender. The second part will analyze why the gulf war has been defined as the “first live war”, of how the U.S. have started a media campaign to influence public opinion in favor of the conflict and how the information sent by journalists’ pool has been censored. In the last part we will analyze the television medium role concerning the terrorism, how “11 September” has led to Afghanistan war, the role of Al Jazeera, the importance of the medium during the second Gulf War and the increasingly present role of the web.

La tesi analizza l’evoluzione e l’impiego militare della televisione. Iniziando dagli 60 dove il medium televisivo raggiunse la sua piena maturità al suo ruolo nel conflitto in Vietnam, analizzando il mito della “guerra in soggiorno” prendendo in esame degli incidenti che hanno messo in cattiva luce gli Stati Uniti e di come la televisione (riportando testimonianze di diversi giornalisti) ha contribuito alla resa degli americani. La seconda parte analizzerà il perché la guerra del Golfo sia stata definita “la prima guerra in diretta”, di come gli Stati Uniti abbiano intrapreso una campagna mediatica per influenzare l’opinione pubblica in favore del conflitto e di come le informazioni trasmesse dai pool di giornalisti furono censurate. Nell’ultima parte si andrà ad analizzare il ruolo del medium televisivo riguardo al terrorismo, di come l’”11 settembre” abbia portato alla guerra in Afghanistan, il ruolo di Al Jazeera, l’importanza dei medium durante la seconda Guerra del Golfo e del ruolo sempre più presente del web.
