Benessere del cavallo sportivo: utilizzo delle reti da fieno per la corretta gestione alimentare in scuderia.

Title: Welfare of sport horse: the use of hay nets for a correct feeding management in stable. Introduction: This thesis follows the curricular internship, where has been analysed the proper feeding management of stabulated horse. It highlighted how is important ensure an adequate level of welfare, especially for athletic horse. Thus, it was decided to investigate this topic, using as focus the use of hay nets as devices to pursue the horse welfare. Aim of study: The goals set for this thesis, has been to analysed the use of hay nets and their application in stable, also trying to reported their strengths and weaknesses. Thus, it was highlighted the validity of the use of hay nets in a way to improve and guarantee horse welfare. Matherials and methods: To achieve these goals, a careful analysis of the research published in this regard was carried out. At first, it is present an analysis of the gastrointestinal tract anatomy, the nutrient and behavioural requirements, which represent the basis of this thesis on the use of hay nets. The latter were analysed showing different shape and sizes currently on sale, but above all trying to study their effects on horse's physiology and behaviour. Results and discussion: Thanks to this research, it was possible to highlight how hay nets with small meshes (i.e. 3-4 cm) can guarantee a time of ingestion adequate for horse's requirements. They can avoid long periods of fasting, so it's possible to affirm that the hay nets can protect horses from the development of ulcers, colics and stereotypies, such as crib-biting or pica. However, weakness have emerged in the use of these devices, the most relevant is represented by the opportunity to develop postural disorders when the hay nets are positioned too high from the ground, this represents an unnatural posture. Thus, it would be desirable to use this device in a position as natural as possible, for example placing the hay net at the height of the fetlock, this with the use of small meshes previously mentioned, lead to an implementation of welfare. In conclusion, it was highlighted how research and studies on the use of hay nets could be deepened, analysing which different shape and size is better for a certain category of horses, or specific life stages.

Titolo: Benessere del cavallo sportivo: utilizzo delle reti da fieno per la corretta gestione alimentare in scuderia. Introduzione: Questo elaborato finale, fa seguito all'attività di tirocinio curriculare nella quale è stata approfondita la corretta gestione alimentare del cavallo in scuderia. Essa ha messo in evidenza quanto sia fondamentale assicurare un adeguato livello di benessere, in particolar modo per i cavalli atleti. È stato così deciso di approfondire il tema del benessere del cavallo sportivo, utilizzando come focus l'utilizzo delle reti da fieno come dispositivi utili per perseguire questo obiettivo. Obiettivi: Gli obiettivi posti per questo elaborato, sono stati la valutazione delle reti da fieno ed il loro impiego in scuderia, cercando di analizzare sia i loro punti di forza che di debolezza, così da riflettere sulla loro utilità e validità al fine di rispettare ed implementare il benessere del cavallo. Materiali e metodi: Per raggiungere gli obiettivi prefissati, è stata svolta un'attenta analisi delle ricerche pubblicate in merito negli ultimi anni. Inizialmente sono stati evidenziati l'anatomia del tratto gastrointestinale, i fabbisogni nutrizionali e comportamentali, i quali hanno rappresentato la base dell'approfondimento in merito all'utilizzo delle reti da fieno. Quest'ultime sono state poi valutate presentando le diverse forme e grandezze presenti in commercio, ma soprattutto cercando di analizzare i loro effetti sulla fisiologia e sul comportamento del cavallo. Risultati e Considerazioni: Dalla ricerca effettuata sono emersi validi spunti di riflessione. Infatti è stato evidenziato come le reti da fieno con maglie di piccole dimensioni, ovvero di circa 3-4 cm, possono garantire un tempo di ingestione adeguato ai fabbisogni del cavallo, evitando lunghi periodi di digiuno e quindi proteggendolo dallo sviluppo di ulcere o coliche, nonché stereotipie orali come ad esempio il ticchio d'appoggio e la pica. Tuttavia, sono emersi anche dei punti di debolezza nell'utilizzo di questi dispositivi, il più rilevante sicuramente è rappresentato dalla possibilità di sviluppare disturbi posturali nel momento in cui le reti sono posizionate ad un'altezza eccessiva, esponendo il cavallo ad una posizione innaturale. Quindi sarebbe auspicabile usare questi dispositivi ad una posizione che simuli il più possibile quella naturale, ad esempio ponendo la rete all'altezza del nodello, ciò insieme alle maglie di piccole dimensioni citate precedentemente, porterebbe ad una notevole implementazione del benessere. In conclusione, è stato evidenziato che la ricerca in merito alle reti da fieno, nonostante i buoni risultati ottenuti fino ad adesso, potrebbe essere approfondita ulteriormente, analizzando ad esempio quale forma di rete da fieno tra quelle in commercio attualmente è più funzionale, o ancor di più se alcuni modelli sono preferibili per determinate categorie di cavalli o specifiche fasi di vita.
