East, West and Orientalism: The Relationship with Literature

The objective of this thesis is to explore the theme of Orientalism and raise more awareness of stereotypes and discriminations towards the Orient. This study aims to analyse how and why the phenomenon called Orientalism has developed, how it has affected and still continues to influence Orientals, how it has been represented in the past and how it is represented today in English Literature. Books, articles and online sources have been consulted for the analysis of this topic. The main research questions that will be clarified later in the dissertation concern the development of Orientalism, the creation of Oriental stereotypes and their relationship with English Literature. The first chapter will deal in particular with Orientalism, by defining the phenomenon and describing its evolution over time. On the other hand, the second chapter will examine extracts of Orientalist texts by various authors belonging to different historical periods.

L'obbiettivo di questa tesi è esplorare il tema dell'Orientalismo e valorizzare stereotipi e discriminazioni verso l'Oriente. Questo studio mira ad analizzare come e perché il fenomeno chiamato Orientalismo si è sviluppato, come ha influenzato e ancora continua a influenzare tutt'oggi gli Orientali, come è stato rappresentato nel passato e come è rappresentato al giorno d'oggi nella letteratura Inglese. Per l'analisi di questo argomento sono stati consultati testi cartacei e materiale online. Le principali domande poste, che verranno successivamente chiarite nella dissertazione, riguardano lo sviluppo dell'Orientalismo, la creazione degli stereotipi Orientali e la loro relazione con la letteratura Inglese. Il primo capitolo affronterà in particolare l'Orientalismo, definendolo e descrivendo la sua evoluzione nel tempo. Il secondo capitolo invece analizzerà estratti di testi Orientalisti di diversi autori appartenenti a periodi storici differenti.
