Luoghi in The English Patient di Michael Ondaatje

This thesis analyzes the different places in Michael Ondaatje's novel The English Patient in relation to the major characters of the book. Especially, it draws attention on the importance of roots in life and how much places can influence and change the identities of people. The introduction presents Michael Ondaatje as both a man and a writer, stressing how the experiences of his life affected his writing. It also offers an overview of the other works written during his literary career. The first chapter of the thesis focuses on the desert and its connection with the English patient alias Count Ladislaus de Almásy. The second chapter revolves around the gardens and their influence on Kip, a Sikh sapper, and on the two women of the novel, Hana and Katharine. Finally, the third chapter presents Villa San Girolamo, where all the characters meet for the first time. The Villa can be seen as a suspended place, where Eden and apocalypse are mixed together.
